Coffee, Memory, and the Art of Pausing

Coffee, Memory, and the Art of Pausing

These two paintings were born from my love for coffee and the deep meaning it holds in my life, in my home country  Nicaragua, and across Latin America. Coffee is more than a drink for us, it is a ritual, a pause, a moment of connection.

For me, the smell of coffee instantly carries me back to my house in León, Nicaragua. It brings the voice of my grandmother, echoing through the rooms. It also brings the presence of my mother and my siblings, shared mornings, quiet gestures, and everyday moments that shaped my sense of home. It brings conversations with friends during tardeadas — those afternoons spent sitting together, drinking coffee, talking, laughing, and simply being present. Time moved slowly then, and yet it was full.

In Latin America, coffee often marks the rhythm of daily life. It gathers people around the table, invites conversation, and creates space for sharing stories — whether life feels easy or heavy in that moment. There is a deep beauty in this simplicity: taking life as it comes, finding warmth and meaning in small rituals, and allowing ourselves to pause.

These paintings carry that feeling for me. They speak of warmth, memory, and belonging. Of the way a simple cup of coffee can hold generations, voices, and emotions. Of finding happiness in the little things,  in a shared moment, a familiar scent, a pause in the day.

These works are also a tribute to the hands behind every cup of coffee — to the people who work the fields with patience, strength, and care. Coffee tells the story of early mornings, sun-warmed land, and generations of knowledge passed down through families. It speaks of resilience, humility, and quiet dedication. These are my people — hardworking, rooted, and deeply connected to the earth. Through these paintings, I wanted to honor their labor, their dignity, and the beauty that grows from effort, care, and love.

Coffee reminds me that life does not need to be perfect to be beautiful. Sometimes, all we need is a moment of stillness, a shared conversation, and the quiet comfort of something familiar — a reminder of home, of family, and of who we are.
